Weeks Nine and Ten

Hi again!

What great examples of ways in which the Internet has been used by you, your family and friends in accessing medical and health care information. We will see continuing progress in this area. I mentioned that while reviewing our postings, I was watching the world series, and up poppled a television spot for WebMD!

This coming week may stir some discussions. In particular we are asked to consider the ways in which Internet access should be filtered for children in schools and libraries. And, the underlying question is when are they old enough to learn to browse without filters?

Finally, I encourage you to review the description in the discussion board where we are to post the Research Plan. Be sure to include ten annotatetd sources and a solid description of your planned research.

Weeks Eight and Nine

Hi-

Fine discussions this past week about how the Internet is impacting the electoral process. In particular, I am elated with the research you have conducted on the voting records of incumbents. I am so very pleased with our interactions in the discussion board.

Looking ahead to this coming week, we will look at ways in which access to health care and health care information have been changed by the advent of the Internet. It should make for some interesting research and discussion!

Just a reminder that research plan is due at the end of the month. Note that the annotated bibiography of ten quality sites that will form the core of your final paper research is an essential element of the research plan. There are links to annotated bibliographies in ALA and MLA styles in the syllabus.

Weeks Seven and Eight

Hi-

Fine discussions this past week about ecommerce and banking online! As I describe in the podcast, we are truly developing an online community. I am so very pleased with our interactions in the discussion board.

Looking ahead to this week, government and the Internet are on the agenda. We will be examining voting records and special interest group endorsements of incumbents and perhaps some early-announcers for the 2006 elections. I think you will find it surprising just how many services the state of Illinois provides online! We will be combing through the site to find ones of particular interest.

And, in this week's cast, I remind you that our research plan is due at the end of the month. Note that the annotated bibiography of ten quality sites that will form the core of your final paper research is an essential element of the research plan. Weeks Six and Seven

Hi-

We had some great discussion this past week about access to the Internet - particularly in the rural areas. And, I think our discussions of Marc Prensky's seminal 2001 article "Digital Natives - Digital Immigrants" was excellent. Nice to note that some of the "immigrants" reported that they really felt like "natives."

Looking ahead to this week, banking and online commerce top the agenda. I look forward to our practical application of searching froogle, biznet, epinions, CNET, and PC Magazine. It will be fun to see the range of purchases we examine.

Weeks Five and Six

A look at our discussions on access to the Internet and bandwidth this past week shows that most of us are happy with the bandwidth we have (mostly DSL and cable modem access). We looked at BPL, WiMax and XMax services as potentially providing access for broad areas that do not have access to the 'net.

This week, our emphasis is again on access. We discuss whether Internet service should be considered a necessity or near-necessity such as the telephone and electricity were considered in the past century. And we are all to identify ourselves as either digital natives or digital immigrants as we discuss Mark Prensky and the differences among age groups accessing the Internet.

Weeks Four and Five

A look at our discussions on online music sharing this past week shows that we hold some divergent views. While we have differing takes on whether music should be shared for free, we all seem to agree that the digital format has an impact that cannot be ignored. We all see a need for reviewing intellectual property rights in the digital age. Looking to our week ahead, we have some interesting new technologies to examine as we look at the whole issue of bandwidth.
